Kristin sighed as the elevator doors opened, happy to be on the home stretch. Her new show was exciting and a lot of fun, but it was taking it out of her. At the end of the night all she wanted to do was go home to a glass of wine, a bath, her dog, her lover and her bed. Not always necessarily in that order. This particular evening, she was going to skip everything and head straight for bed.
She turned the key in the lock and opened the door. She hadn’t even fully stepped into the apartment when the living room door burst open and Idina came striding purposefully towards her.
“Wha…mmmph”
The rest of the word was smothered as Idina’s lips claimed her own. Kristin was taken by surprise and actually took a step backwards into the hallway, such was the force of the kiss. She wrapped her arms around Idina’s shoulders, attempting to kiss back with equal passion but she knew her efforts were half-hearted at best. She was just too tired.
Idina pulled back slightly, her lips still touching Kristin’s ask she spoke.
“I gotta have you baby…now.”
She tugged on Kristin’s hand, pulling her into the apartment and closing the door, then shoving her unceremoniously in the direction of the bedroom.
“Wait…no…Dee…stop!”
Kristin turned around and put both hands on Idina’s chest, halting her forward motion but causing her to raise her eyebrows. Kristin looked at where her hands were resting and rolled her eyes. She removed them.
“I’m just way too tired tonight, darling. All I wanna do is go to bed.”
Idina seemed to perk up at this.
“Oh, of course, that’s fine! Let’s get you to bed then.”
She draped an arm around Kristin’s shoulders and continued in the direction of the bedroom. Kristin regarded her suspiciously, Idina was rarely so easily dissuaded when she was feeling frisky. Kristin stopped walking and watched as irritation briefly flitted across Idina’s face.
“I’m just going to get myself a cup of tea with some honey first.” Kristin said, turning around.
Idina caught her arm.
“No! I mean, you’re tired, why don’t you get ready for bed and I’ll bring the tea to you, hmmm? Doesn’t that sound nice? Then we’ll get you all tucked up for the night.”
Yep, definitely something strange going on.
“Well, OK. But I just wanna say goodnight to Maddie fi…”
“No! I uh…”
The irritation had quickly changed to panic and Idina’s grip had tightened on her arm.
“…I think…” Idina lowered her voice to a stage whisper, “…that Maddie’s asleep.”
“So? She always wakes up when I come in. She needs to kiss her Momma goodnight.”
“But she…I…” Idina was floundering and Kristin was fed-up. She put her hands on her hips and looked Idina straight in the eye.
“Idina Menzel, what have you done that you don’t want me to see?”
“Nothing.”
Idina attempted to look wide-eyed and innocent. Kristin raised an eyebrow, her foot tapping on the floor.
“Uh huh. You’ve tried everything you can think of to get me straight to the bedroom. Normally this would be flattering…but when you’re offering to make me tea and tuck me up in bed I just know there’s something on your conscience.”
“Are you saying that I’m usually inconsiderate?”
“Don’t change the subject.”
Idina pouted and lowered her chin, looking through her eyelashes at Kristin. Kristin shook her head.
“Not gonna work tonight, honey.”
She turned and headed back in the direction of the kitchen, Idina right behind her. She pushed open the kitchen door and saw Maddie sitting in her basket. Upon seeing her mistress, the little dog bounded across the floor and starting jumping up at Kristin’s ankles. Kristin bent down and scooped the dog up, looking at her quizzically.
“What’s that on her head?”
“Uh…a bow?”
“Did you put it in?”
“Yes.” Idina’s voice was defensive. “What? I can’t be all girly and playful once in a while?”
“Of course you can sweetheart, it’s just that you never have before…and that’s a huge bow. It’s covering her whole head.”
“It’s cute.”
“Yeah, but it might strangle her when she’s sleeping…so how about we just take it o…”
Kristin’s voice faltered as she slipped the bow off Maddie’s head to reveal a thin line of dried blood just above her ear.
“Kris, I am so sorry. It just…it all happened so fast. It was that cat from next door…you know the one, it’s always looking at me with those evil cat eyes…anyway, I was taking Maddie out so that she could take a shi…go potty, and out of nowhere this cat springs out and goes for her! So I’m trying to get it off her but it did that before I could do anything. I’m so, so sorry. I took her to the vet but I felt like they were kinda laughing at me and they didn’t do much, just washed it…and…are you mad?”
Kristin was shaking her head and looking at Maddie. Then a huge smile broke out across her face. She looked at Idina affectionately.
“OK, I was gonna mess with you a little but I’m just way too tired to enjoy watching you beg and plead anymore.”
Idina’s brow scrunched up.
“You mean…you’re not mad?”
“Dee, honey, it’s a scratch. I’m not surprised the vet laughed at you. It’s not your fault, this could just as easily have happened if I had been taking her out.”
Kristin put Maddie down and pulled Idina into a hug. Idina sighed, then laughed.
“You have no idea how worried I’ve been waiting for you to come home.”
Kristin pulled back and looked up at her, one eyebrow raised.
“Oh, I think I’ve got some idea. By the way, how were you planning to distract me from seeing it until she healed? I can see one night being feasible but any longer would’ve been a stretch.”
“I hadn’t thought much past tonight. I s’pose I was gonna try to keep you in bed, exhaust you with lots of sex, something like that?”
Kristin giggled.
“Well now, that does sound interesting.”
“I thought you were tired.”
“Maybe I’m not all that tired anymore.”
She leaned up and kissed Idina, slowly and thoroughly. When she pulled away Idina was grinning from ear to ear. She held out her hand.
“Well, Ms Chenoweth, allow me to take you to bed and ravish you by way of apology for damaging your dog.”
Kristin’s eyes nearly bugged out of her head and she grabbed Idina’s hand, shoving her shirt up her arm.
“Dee! Look at your arm!”
“Huh? Oh…it’s just a couple of scratches…no big deal.”
Kristin traced the angry red welts covering Idina’s forearm with her fingers before leaning down to place gentle kisses on the area.
“That feels nice.”
Kristin shook her head.
“I cannot believe you were so worried about that little teeny scratch on Maddie when your arm has practically been ripped to shreds.”
“That’s my Kris, not prone to exaggeration. And I know how you are about your baby.”
“And you should know how I am about you. Did you even clean this?”
“Yes, mother. I used antiseptic and everything…it’s fine. Now I seem to recall you saying something about not being tired.”
“Dee, seriously, don’t ever jump into a dog-fight again, OK?”
“It wasn’t a dog-fight, it was a dog-cat fight.”
“Idina…”
“OK, I promise I won’t try to get between two animals intent on biting and or scratching one another again.”
“Good, I like you in one piece.”
“And what a fine piece I am…now are you going to take me to bed or what?”
Kristin yawned, covering her mouth with one hand. Idina groaned. Kristin squeezed her waist lovingly.
“I’m sorry baby, I really am tired. I wouldn’t be much fun. But I promise I’ll make it up to you in the morning.”
“Yeah, yeah, promises, promises. That’s what I get for being a hero.”
“A hero? Yeah, it was ever so heroic how you tried to keep me twenty feet away from my dog and attempted to cover the evidence with a pink bow. Not at all cowardly.”
“So I’m a cowardly hero, what does that get me?”
Kristin pretended to think.
“Snuggling and a goodnight kiss?”
Idina nodded.
“Good enough for me.”
She laced her fingers through Kristin’s and they walked out of the kitchen, calling in unison.
“’Night, Maddie.”

Date: 2006-07-22 07:28 am (UTC)What I really, really want to know is exactly what happened to you and are you hurt???? (I can come out of my narissictic cocoon of self-involvement for a second or two to worry about your well-being).
Also, Kristin turned around and put both hands on Idina’s chest, halting her forward motion but causing her to raise her eyebrows. Kristin looked at where her hands were resting and rolled her eyes. She removed them. Hee! The image of that really amused me because I am totally juvenile apparently.

Date: 2006-07-22 12:36 pm (UTC)The Dee and Kris stuff really gets to me - See, this is a product of reading far too much Chenzel fic in a short space of time. Pretty much my characters are based on the characters of other writers, and they call each other this a lot in fic. I can't bring myself to make Idina call Kristin 'Cheno' though.
What I really, really want to know is exactly what happened to you and are you hurt???? - *blushes* No, I'm fine. Remember those dogs that caused me stress last year with the cuts and the vet and everything? Well, yeah, same dogs, same thing. Was in the emergency vets on Thursday night holding a dog's head while it got staples put in its eyebrow. I didn't jump into any dog fights or anything. And the only thing on my arm was drool and blood from the vet getting the sterile water everywhere during the irrigation of the wound.
The image of that really amused me because I am totally juvenile apparently. - Well, I wrote it, I must be juvenile too.

I am pleased that you are OK even if you do go around hurting animals
Well, I wrote it, I must be juvenile too Well at least I have company.

I am pleased that you are OK even if you do go around hurting animals - I didn't hurt it!!! It was in a fight. I was the one who took it to the vet and got it fixed!!! I'm the good guy here.
