Date: 2010-03-31 06:54 pm (UTC)“Memma!”
She turns to find Abby toddling towards her at an alarming rate and she hurries to scoop her up into her arms.
“Hey baby,” she coos, dropping a kiss on Abby’s forehead and receiving a slobbery one on her cheek in return.
Somewhere in her head she registers that she should be squirming away, but her body doesn’t react. It hasn’t for a while. Footsteps draw her attention and she smiles as Terri enters the hallway, a fake scowl in place.
“Hey scamp, you ran off before I could even get up of the floor!”
Emma turns back to Abby.
“Terri’s old, sweetie, she needs a lot of time to move her creaky bones,” she stage whispers, knowing fine well Abby has no idea what she’s talking about.
Terri’s mouth drops open.
“Less of the old, sweetheart. I can still keep up with you,” Terri says, close enough now to press a kiss to Emma’s lips. She continues in a lower voice. “All night, if necessary.”
Emma feels a familiar thrill go through her at Terri’s words, she looks up at her through her lashes, but rather than the response she had planned, a laugh erupts out of her mouth. Terri’s brow creases in confusion.
“That wasn’t a joke,” she says, the beginnings of a pout forming on her lips.
“I know, sweetie,” Emma assures her, biting her lip to stop from laughing. “Uh…have you been finger-painting today?”
Terri’s confusion is clearly growing.
“Yeah,” she says, drawing the word out. “How’d you know?”
Emma picks up Abby’s hand and waves it at Terri.
“Because you have a perfect little green handprint about this size on your cheek,” she says, still trying not to laugh.
Terri slaps her palm against her face and rubs, feeling the paint crumble and flake under her fingers. She gasps.
“Abby! Why didn’t you tell me I had paint on my face?” she asks, tickling Abby’s sides to take any sting out of her words.
Abby giggles and presses her face into Emma’s cheek.
“Tewwi funny,” she says and Emma laughs in delight.
“Yes, yes she is,” she agrees, ignoring Terri’s indignant look.
Terri is about to retort when she stops herself, clearly coming to a realisation. She turns and yells up the hallway.
“Quinn Fabray! Why did you not tell me I had paint on my face?”
An amused voice floats out of Quinn’s bedroom.
“Oh, did you not know? I thought you were going for a new look...kinda had a Pocahontas vibe.”
Terri grinds her teeth and Emma, again, has to stop herself from laughing. Terri fixes her with an ‘I’m not amused’ stare and she is immediately contrite.
“Quit being a brat,” Terri yells over her shoulder before turning back to Emma. She keeps her voice loud enough for Quinn to hear. “Speaking of, she’s refusing to do her homework.”
“When am I ever gonna need dumb stuff like English? I can already talk proper,” comes the retort.
“Do you see what I have to put up with?” Terri asks, with an exasperated shrug in Emma’s direction. “Dinner will be ready in fifteen minutes. See if you can talk some sense into her. I have to go and wash this paint off.”
“I think it’s cute,” she says, shifting Abby to her hip and reaching out to trace the now flaking paint. “With that face, you can pull it off.”
Terri’s scowl melts into a smile and she shakes her head, catching Emma’s hand in her own and holding it.
“Flatterer,” she mutters, but moves in for a kiss nonetheless, drawing Emma’s arm around her waist.
She only pulls away when Abby tugs on her hair. She looks at the toddler in suspicion. Abby just smiles back with big, innocent eyes.
“I swear Quinn’s training her,” Terri mumbles. “Like mother, like daughter.”
Emma smiles and kisses Terri’s non-painted cheek.
“Go wash up, I’ll speak to Quinn and then we’ll all have dinner, okay?”

Date: 2010-03-31 06:55 pm (UTC)“Hey. Good day at work?”
“Uh huh. Homework?” Emma asks, an eyebrow quirked.
Quinn grins.
“Did it in study hall, Rachel helped,” she says, getting off the bed and walking towards Emma. “Hey baby, coming to mama?”
Abby squirms and reaches out for her mother, Emma passes her over and Quinn blows raspberries against her cheek.
“And you didn’t think to tell Terri that you’ve already done your homework?” Emma asks, trying in vain not to smile.
“Nah, it’s fun to watch her try to be all parent-y,” Quinn says. “The vein in her forehead looked really close to popping tonight. Fingers crossed for next time.”
“Quinn...” Emma begins, using her best stern tone.
“I know, I’m sorry. I’ll tell her about the homework at dinner, okay?” Quinn says.
“Okay, and you’ll apologise, right?” Emma says.
“Ugh, you know I hate to do that,” Quinn says with an eyeroll. She turns to Abby. “Will you say sorry to Terri for mommy?”
“Sowwy Tewwi,” Abby says, earnestly.
Emma smiles and kisses Abby on the top of her head.
“You’re such a good girl,” she says, fixing Quinn with a look that clearly indicates that she had better learn some manners from her daughter. “Dinner in ten minutes.”
“We’ll be there,” Quinn says, spinning Abby around and making her squeal in delight.
Emma walks back down the hall to the kitchen and finds Terri stirring something on the stove. She leans against the doorway, a gentle smile working its way across her face. Terri glances over her shoulder.
“You better not still be laughing at the paint thing,” she warns, turning back to her task.
Emma pushes herself off the wood and walks over until she’s standing right behind Terri. She slips her arms around her waist and rests her chin on her shoulder.
“Nope,” she says, happily. “I was just thinking about our crazy, messy, amazing life.”
“And what were you thinking about it?” Terri mutters, adding some ingredient or other to her sauce.
“That I love our strange little family and that I wouldn’t change it for the world,” Emma says, her lips moving against Terri’s neck.
“Don’t use the word ‘family’ around Quinn, okay? I don’t want her getting too attached,” Terri says, but she is smiling.
“Uh huh, sure sweetie,” Emma says, pecking Terri on the side of her mouth.
Terri turns her head and makes it a proper kiss until a loud voice interrupts them.
“Again? Are you two trying to scar my child for life?”
Emma pulls away slightly and smiles at Terri’s scowl, she cups Terri’s face and strokes her cheek with her thumb.
“Wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Date: 2010-04-02 01:35 pm (UTC)For some reason I really love Memma but my fav line was “Less of the old, sweetheart. I can still keep up with you,” Terri says, close enough now to press a kiss to Emma’s lips. She continues in a lower voice. “All night, if necessary.” I prefer not to think about the laughing that follows - in my mind it has totally gone off in a whole different tangent ;)
Re: E/T +Q = best dysfunctional family ever! (2)
Date: 2010-04-02 07:42 pm (UTC)The E/T+Q thing is from Glitter. E and T have kind of become surrogate parents to Quinn. (Except that T and Q sort of flirt with each other, it's disturbing.) This is an extension of that.
in my mind it has totally gone off in a whole different tangent - Yep. That tangent happens all the time on Glitter.

Except that T and Q sort of flirt with each other, it's disturbing. And now I feel sick. The ducks and I both need help.
