Title: Love each day
Author: Angie
Fandom: 'The Descent' (Movie)
Pairing: Beth/Holly
Rating: R
A/N: Apologies to any Irish people reading. Holly's accent is supposed to be written phonetically but I'm not entirely sure that it is.

Beth stood watching the last of the sunlight fade to a gentle grey over the trees. She lifted her beer bottle and took a swallow, hoping that all would go well the following day. For Sarah’s sake. She heard the cabin door open and expected Sarah’s soft voice to tell her to come in out of the cold.

“Got a loight?”

The thick, Irish brogue definitely wasn’t Sarah’s. Beth turned to see Holly approaching, an unlit cigarette hanging out of her mouth. She reached into her pocket and located her lighter. She tossed it to the younger girl who caught it deftly, lighting her cigarette and taking along draw. She came to stand beside Beth at the railing.

“T’anks,” she said, holding out the lighter.

Beth nodded. She turned back to the rapidly disappearing scenery.

“Bloody cold ou’ here, wha’?”

Beth felt the hairs on her arms stand up and she shivered involuntarily. A strong arm wound itself around her own and a warm presence invaded Beth’s personal space. She looked down at the top of the spiky head currently occupying her shoulder and fought the urge to shrug the other girl off. Beth was not a tactile person. Nor was she prone to making friends easily.

“So…di’n’t hear you joinin’ in much wit’ all the yappin’ on about men that lot were doin’ earlier.”

Beth felt anger prickle in her chest.

“Is that right?”

“Yeah. T’ought maybe you had abou’ as much use for men as I do.”

Holly raised her head and looked up at Beth, still holding onto her arm. Beth had formulated an indignant response about Holly’s opinions and exactly where she could stick them, but for some reason, looking at that urchin-like face, it evaporated on her lips. She found her mouth twisting into a smile.

“Yeah, well, they have their uses. Occasionally. Catching spiders.”

“Openin’ jars.”

“Barbecueing.”

“That’s abou’ it.”

“Pretty much.”

The both smiled. Holly laid her head back on Beth’s shoulder.

“What’re we lookin’ a’? It’s foackin’ dark!”

Beth laughed, a deep resonating sound. She shook her head.

“So if it’s cold and it’s dark, why are you out here?”

She felt Holly shrug against her. Maybe it was the fresh air. Maybe it was the beer. Maybe it was Holly’s impossibly large eyes. Whatever the reason, Beth’s arm somehow ended up around Holly’s shoulders. Both of Holly’s arms slipped around Beth’s waist and then they were kissing.

“When they separated, Holly looked up at Beth, her smile bright in the dim light.

“Di’n’t think I’d get a snog outta this trip.”

Beth raised an eyebrow.

“Me neither, babe.”

Holly shivered and pulled Beth closer.

“C’mon, let’s go inside. There are plenty of perfectly warm rooms available and we’re standing here freezing our arses off.”

Holly’s hand slid down to grab a handful of Beth’s backside. She grinned up at her.

”We wouldn’t want tha’!”

Beth shook her head and turned to go into the cabin. Holly’s voice stopped her.

“I’m gonna nip to the loo in my room. Why don’t you grab us a coupla beers and meet me there?”

Holly quirked an eyebrow, her head dipped slightly. Beth nodded and Holly’s grin returned in force. She spun on her heel and headed over to the bedroom she was to share with Sam. Beth sighed and went into the main cabin, going directly to the fridge and pulling out two beers. When she stood up, Sarah was directly behind her.

“Jesus!”

“Never mind ‘Jesus’, where’s Holly and what have you two been up to?”

“Nothing.” Beth could feel the colour rushing to her face.

“Nothing my arse. I know that look. It’s your ‘I’ve pulled’ look.”

Beth grinned.

“It might be.”

“You jammy git! Well, have a good time. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

“Sarah, I’ll only be doing things you wouldn’t do.”

Sarah smiled. She reached out and grabbed Beth’s arm, squeezing affectionately.

“Seriously. Have a good time. Eat, drink and be merry…love each day.”

Beth nodded solemnly. She knew just what those words meant to Sarah. She winked and then headed back outside, ignoring the whistles and shouts that followed her. She also ignored the little voice in her head telling her that she shouldn’t be doing this. In fact, she told the little voice to fuck off, that she was well overdue some reckless fun in her life.

She opened the door to Holly’s cabin to find Holly in bed with the covers pulled up right up past her nose, so only her eyes were showing.

“Foakin’ freezin’ in here as well!”

Beth stood in the doorway and smiled.

Love each day.

Yay! I *finally* saw The Descent and having been searching the net high and wide for fic. 'Cuz this movie was slashy as Hell and should have mountains of girl action fic. While I prefer Beth with Sara, I thought this was a cute extension of the scene on the porch between the two. Thanks for writing.

I had completely forgotten about this fic! I'm glad you liked it.

Did you find more 'Descent fic' on your travels?
