AUTHOR'S NOTES: This is AU with regard to Idina and Taye's relationship. Oh, and I'm sure that Tracie's actually much cooler than this, but we all have our inner fangirl hidden somewhere.
Tracie grabbed Idina by the lapels of the velvet shirt she was wearing and yanked her close, staring wide-eyed at her.
“What did you just say?”
Idina stumbled back a little, surprised by the force.
“Uh…I said Kristin’s coming by the set today.”
Tracie gasped, like it was the first time she’d heard the sentence, despite the fact Idina had said the same words fifteen seconds previously.
“Kristin Chenoweth?”
Idina laughed, rolling her eyes slightly.
“How many Kristins do I talk about?”
“Kristin Chenoweth is coming here? Today?”
Idina peeled Tracie’s fingers away from her jacket with some difficulty and held her hands.
“Honey, you’re kinda scaring me. What’s all this about?”
Tracie turned and walked away, flopping down onto a nearby couch. She looked at Idina for a moment before feeling able to reply.
“I love her.”
“Me too,” Idina said, grinning.
“No, but I love her.”
“Oh God…”
“What?”
“Tell me you’re not a fangirl.”
“No I’m no…Yes. Yes, I am. Completely. What am I going to say to her? Oh fuck, what if I faint when she comes in?”
Idina came and sat beside Tracie on the couch.
“How come you never told me about this strange and disturbing obsession you have with my girlfriend?”
“Because I have a strange and disturbing obsession with your girlfriend. I thought it’d be weird to mention this to you. I was trying to be cool about it. And I didn’t think I’d have to see her until maybe the wrap party, or the premiere. Both of which I plan to be very drunk at.”
“Wouldn’t that make it worse?” Idina asked, picturing a drunk Tracie drooling over Kristin.
“No. I’m a lot more confident drunk.”
“So…this obsession, it’s with her work, right? I mean…it’s not…like a crush thing?”
“Oh…oh, no! I just…she’s so amazing. I mean, did you see ‘Charlie Brown’? Or ‘Steel Pier’? Man, she killed me in both of those. And don’t even get me started on ‘Wicked’.”
Idina pouted.
“OK, how long have we been working together and you never once mentioned that you saw ‘Wicked’? And now you mention it and it’s clear that I wasn’t even your favourite in it. I’m so offended.”
“Oh, you were fabulous…but you gotta understand the depth of my admiration for Kristin. Idina, I wore glitter when I went to see ‘Wicked’.”
“Oh fuck.”
“Uh huh.”
“Well, you’re gonna meet her today.”
“And I am still coming to terms with that. I saw Wicked five times, you know. I was there at her last performance.”
“OK, let me get this straight. You saw me perform on Kristin’s last night, you saw me at my most vulnerable, the most real performance I have ever given, and you didn’t even think to mention this?”
“Idina, I didn’t know you at the time and I’m sorry but it was all about Kristin for me. When her voice cracked during ‘For Good’…well I…”
“Oh please, I’m going to vomit.”
Tracie wiped at her eyes which had misted over when recalling that emotional evening. She scowled at Idina.
“I’d think you’d be a little more understanding.”
“I’ve never worn glitter to go watch a show.”
A call went out for principal cast to return to the set. Idina stood and pulled Tracie up, they headed to the door. Idina stopped and turned, a concerned expression on her face.
“Oh, I should probably mention, Kris really doesn’t like to see other women touching me. She gets insanely jealous. Just thought you should know.”
She offered Tracie a bright smile before turning and continuing. Tracie chased after her.
“Are you kidding me? Why the fuck did you invite her to come down today then? Our engagement announcement? Jesus Christ!”
“I didn’t invite her, she invited herself. And there are…other reasons that I suggested that today might be a better day.”
Tracie thought for a second, wondering what on earth could be so important that it overshadowed the fact that she was going to have to kiss Idina in front of Kristin Chenoweth. Then it hit her.
“Oh. Taye’s not here.”
“Yeah, I mean, obviously we’ve got what is regarded as an amicable post-divorce relationship. But still, we don’t like to rub his nose in it, ya know?”
“Idina, we have to kiss in this scene.”
“Honey, we kiss in practically every scene we’re in together.”
“But…we’re announcing our intention to get married.”
Idina smiled sympathetically as they reached the set and were ushered to their places. Tracie caught a glimpse of blonde hair and immediately averted her eyes.
“I think she’s here,” she hissed to Idina.
Idina turned around and craned her neck, her face splitting into a wide grin as she caught sight of Kristin. She was seated in Chris’s chair behind the monitor and there were at least six men hanging around her. Idina raised her hand in greeting and Kristin returned the gesture.
Idina settled down at the table, blowing a kiss directly into the camera, knowing Kristin could see her. Tracie took a gulp out of the glass in her hand, wishing that it was real champagne instead of apple juice.
“OK kids, let’s do this.” Chris called, standing behind Kristin. “Action!”
Tracie steeled herself during her ‘father’s’ speech. She couldn’t hear anything but the rushing in her ears and far too soon it was time to kiss Idina. She turned her head, smiling tightly, and leaned in. At the last second she turned away abruptly, causing Idina’s lips to make contact with her cheek.
“Cut!” Chris shouted. “Problem Tracie?”
“Sorry! No, no problem. Go again.”
Same rigmarole. The scene went too quickly and before she knew it she was leaning in and her lips touched Idina’s. Almost immediately she pulled back, her shoulders tense, her back ramrod straight.
“Cut! Tracie…it’s Maureen who’s hesitant here…you need five minutes?” Chris offered.
“Yeah, thanks.” Tracie let out a shuddering breath.
Idina was fidgeting in her seat. She leaned in close.
“Listen, I was just…”
“Idina, your make-up needs fixed.”
Out of nowhere a make-up girl was in front of her, touching up her lipstick, severely impairing her ability to speak. Tracie stood up and walked away slightly, trying to clear her head.
“Did she forget to brush her teeth this morning?”
Tracie jumped slightly at the unexpected voice. She turned to find Kristin Chenoweth looking up at her, a curious expression on her face.
“Huh?”
“Idina. Seems like you’re really not keen on kissing her. She’s not all that repulsive is she?” Kristin asked, mischievously.
Tracie couldn’t help but smile at the tiny blonde.
“I…no, no of course she’s not. I just…with you..”
“Oh Lord, am I putting you off? Just ignore me! Pretend like I’m not here. You go for it, girl.”
Tracie scrunched up her brow. This didn’t sound like the same ‘insanely jealous’ woman that Idina had described. In a flash of realisation, she knew she’d been had. She turned to Kristin, lowering her voice.
“Idina told me that you were the jealous type, that you didn’t like other women touching her.”
A smile broke across Kristin’s features that could only be described as evil.
“Oh, she did, did she?”
Tracie nodded, tentatively.
“But I’m beginning to think she was messing with me.”
“Uh huh, I think she might’ve been.” Kristin lowered her eyebrows, obviously thinking.
Tracie continued to look at Kristin, awed by the fact that she was standing talking away to her like they were old buddies. She drew in a deep breath.
“Look, I need to say this in case I pass out in a minute. I’m a really huge fan of yours. I’ve seen everything you’ve been in and I think you are amazing. There, I said it, now I can go and die of embarrassment somewhere.”
She turned to leave but Kristin caught her arm, a giggle tinkling out of her mouth.
“Honey, that’s the sweetest thing I ever heard! Why should you be embarrassed? I’m really flattered. Especially when you have such a killer voice yourself.” Kristin said, smiling genuinely at Tracie.
“You…you’ve heard me sing?”
“Well…Dee brings home the dailies sometimes, and she plays ‘Take me or leave’ me in the car a lot to practise her lip synching. You have a tremendous voice.”
Tracie blushed deeply, her first instinct was to deny her singing ability, as she always did. But she didn’t want to call Kristin Chenoweth a liar either. So she just nodded to accept the compliment for what it was.
“Tracie! We’re gonna go again. You ready?” Chris called, over the noise.
Tracie looked at Kristin, who winked at her.
“Yep, ready.”
Tracie took her place by Idina at the table. Once again, Idina leaned as if to speak to her but was cut off when the camera started rolling. Tracie played the scene perfectly, being as intimate as she had ever been with Idina. She glanced at Kristin once or twice during breaks and saw her talking to the rest of the cast.
“OK guys, let’s call it a day. Great work Tracie, Idina.” Chris gave them a thumbs up.
Idina stood and moved towards Tracie but was prevented from saying anything when a tiny blonde intercepted her, throwing her arms around her waist from behind. Idina turned into the embrace, placing a kiss soundly on Kristin’s lips.
“Hey baby!” Kristin said, happily.
“Hey yourself, having fun making the boys drool?” Idina grinned down at her.
Kristin pretended to consider that.
“Yeah, for a while, gets old though.”
She ran her hand down Idina’s back and onto her leather covered behind.
“Now, you in these pants, that doesn’t get old.”
They both laughed and Tracie looked away, feeling like she was intruding.
“Oh, Tracie….”
She turned back to see that Idina was approaching, holding Kristin’s hand.
“Kris, this is Tracie. Tracie, Kristin.”
Tracie was about to open her mouth to say they’d already met but Kristin was stepping forward holding out her hand, smiling widely. Tracie took the offered hand and shook it, a little confused.
“Well, it’s very nice to meet you Tracie, I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“Tracie’s a fan of yours Kris, she loved you in Wicked.” Idina said, rolling her eyes at Tracie.
“Really? How sweet!” Kristin exclaimed, winking at Tracie who was growing more baffled by the second.
Just as she was about to enquire as to what the fuck was going on, Rosario came up and draped her arm around Idina’s shoulders.
“Hey babe.”
Idina’s eyes went wide as Rosario’s lips made contact with her own in what could only be described as a very passionate kiss.
“Mmmph…”
Idina got her hands on Rosario’s shoulders and shoved her back. Rosario smiled lazily, ignoring Idina’s expression and turned to face Tracie and Kristin, both of whom were staring with their mouths hanging open.
“Hey Trace, this a friend of yours?”
Tracie looked at Kristin and had a flashback of seeing her speak to Rosario while they were filming. A spark of realisation went off in her head and she suppressed a smile.
“No I am not a friend of hers. I happen to be Idina’s girlfriend.” Kristin turned to Idina, her eyes blazing. “You want to explain to me why random girls are coming up and kissing you?”
“Kris…I…she…I…”
Idina couldn’t form a sentence, so deep was her shock. She turned to Rosario, looking for an explanation. Rosario had her hand over her mouth.
“Oh God, Dee, I’m so sorry. I…you should have said…I thought we were going out tonight…I didn’t realise your girlfriend was gonna be here…I’ll just…I should go.”
Idina’s mouth was open but no sound was coming out. She looked from Rosario to Kristin and back again. Kristin put her hands over her face.
“Idina Menzel, I cannot believe this is happening. I cannot believe you would do this. Especially when you know how jealous and possessive I am and that I can’t stand it when another woman touches you.”
“I…I didn’t…you…wait…what?” Idina halted in her excuses as Kristin’s words sunk in.
Kristin couldn’t help the smirk that appeared on her face.
“You know me, I go mad with jealousy whenever you speak to another woman and here you are kissing them. It’s really quite unbelievable.”
Idina spun round, advancing on Tracie.
“You told her?”
Tracie held up her hands.
“Hey, I didn’t know anything about this, I swear!”
Then Idina rounded on Rosario.
“And you! You were involved in all of this?”
Rosario grinned and shrugged. Idina finally turned to face Kristin.
“And you! I can’t believe that you would set this up!”
“Serves you right for playing awful tricks on people, sweetheart.”
Idina shook her head, regarding the three smiling women with disbelief.
“Bitches! All of you.”
She put a hand over her heart.
“I fucking thought I was going to have a heart-attack.”
Kristin came up and wrapped her arms around Idina’s neck as the other two dissolved into giggles.
“Awwwww, baby, I’m sorry.”
Idina pouted and Kristin pulled her neck down to place her own kiss on Idina’s lips. Idina relaxed somewhat and let her hands go to Kristin’s hips. Rosario wolf-whistled, parting them. Idina kept her arms loosely around Kristin’s waist as she addressed her co-stars.
”We’re going for dinner, would you like to join us? Even though I shouldn’t ever speak to either of you again.”
Tracie looked at Rosario, who nodded.
“Sure, we’d love to join you.” Tracie said, feeling much more able to converse with Kristin now that they had been involved in a plot to thoroughly embarrass Idina.
They started to walk in the direction of the dressing rooms.
“Now, are you keeping those pants on? Because I really think you should.” Kristin asked, patting Idina’s ass.
“No I’m not keeping them on. I can barely move in them, let alone eat.” Idina said, firmly.
“Yeah, plus you don’t wanna be picked up by the police for prostitution on the way to dinner,” Tracie offered, cheekily.
Idina raised her eyebrow at Tracie before turning to Kristin.
“Gee Kris, did you know that Tracie wore glitter when she came to see 'Wicked'?”
Tracie closed her eyes, fighting the blush that rose to her cheeks. She felt Kristin’s small hand on her arm and looked up to find a sympathetic expression awaiting her.
“It’s a nightmare to get off isn’t it? I was finding it in the strangest places for months after I finished Wicked.”
“So was I!” Idina put in, squeezing Kristin against her side.
“Don’t be vulgar, darling.”
Tracie laughed. Rosario took her arm and they walked on in companionable silence. Dinner was definitely going to be an experience.
