A/N: Set after 'Objects in Space' Much to my chagrin, I haven't seen 'Serenity' as yet so this goes AU after 'OiS'.
Authors grumblings: The challenge is 'Three'. I am so in love with the Inara/Mal/Kaylee OT3. Yet I couldn't write a decent threesome drabble? How rubbish am I?

She lasted three weeks.

*****

Her first night away she spent awake, remembering all the goodbyes. Wash trying, and failing, to hold back tears. Zoe’s firm hug, the first she could remember sharing with the tall warrior. Book’s warm words of comfort. Simon’s nervous kiss on the cheek. Jayne’s attempt to kiss her on the lips. Holding Kaylee close as she sobbed into her neck, begging her to stay.

River’s farewell stayed with her, keeping her awake long after the world was sleeping. The others had filed back onto the ship, Simon’s arm around Kaylee’s shaking shoulders. Mal was waiting silently on the mule. River had come to her, reached out and placed her palm on her chest.

“Your heart will break down. It’ll need fixing. She’s good at fixing things. Be sure to come back to let her fix it.”

She’d pulled away, shaking her head. But River knew. River knew who held her heart.

After a week she stopped pretending that it was Mal she wanted.

*****

After two weeks she set about finding Serenity.

*****

After three weeks she went back home. One look at those oil smudged cheeks and that excited smile, and instantly her broken heart was fixed.

I love your AU but I will be happy when you can be canon post Objects in Space (I love Simon saying that he has had a complicated relationship with River and I still get all icky at the thought of Kaylee getting tied up and .... let's not go there)

If it makes you feel any better, I set out to write a threesome for the Three challenge and failed but that's OK - I like the River drabble that resulted and you should not feel bad about not doing you OT3 cause this was beautiful just the way it is. After a week she stopped pretending that it was Mal she wanted. - as much as I love Inara/Mal I really love this line.

It will be a happy day indeed when I can do canon past 'OiS'. I was so worried for Kaylee in that ep. And I finally figured out the appeal of River. Other than a couple of moments in a handful of eps, I didn't really get her. But I loved her in this.

you should not feel bad about not doing you OT3 cause this was beautiful just the way it is - Thank you. I don't think I'll ever be able to write M/I/K. I was turning ideas over in my head, and while I firmly believe that Inara wants the other two and they both want her, I can't really see Mal and Kaylee as a pair. I have read some fics with them as a threesome which worked, but I don't think I could pull it off with any degree of success.

I didn't really get her. But I loved her in this. - It is very much River's tour de force of the series - you know I think it may have solidified my River love but in retrospect (ie rewatching) there are many awesome River moments - the Bible scene, throwing up in Simon's bed, "no power in the verse can stop me", asking who do you suppose is in there during the woman's labour, "I can kill you with my brain" (or is it mind? Can't check, DVDs not here)

I was so worried for Kaylee in that ep I am feeling bad just thinking about it.

I don't think I'll ever be able to write M/I/K. - I don't think I'll ever be able to write any threesome.

there are many awesome River moments - Yes, there are. I think I was too busy falling in love with everybody else to notice much more than all the craziness first time around. But rewatching definitely helps with the River-love.

And I'm pretty sure it's 'Brain'. See icon.

Pleased that it is brain - that's what I thought and I just don't like to be wrong about something as important as this.

I don't know anyone in that sort of arrangement either but I did see a shirt once that said "I am two people short of a menage" that I considered buying FFM

I have to say that my appreciation of River has increased exponentially since seeing the film. She would probably have ranked last out of nine in my line-up of character preference beforehand but she's jumped up a few places now. Definitely overtaking Simon.

I don't really get the Simon appeal - other than someone for my boy Jayne to mock - "Didn't we have an intricate plan as to how they were going to not be here?"

I don't really get the Simon appeal - I think it must be hard to play Simon. He's a hard character to give appeal to. He is there to exposit a lot about River and worry about her and try to make her better. I like his bond with River but it sort of defines him and makes him slightly one-dimensional. He can't fulfil his life's ambition because of River. He can't make a move on Kaylee because of River. He can't leave the ship and go home because of River.

I don't dislike Simon but I don't really love him either. I like his relationship with Jayne and I like that he's the butt of a lot of jokes. There seems to be quite a lot of Simon fic around. I've seen some Simon/Inara fic which is just wrong on many levels.

Oh I don't dislike him and as Jayne implies (But with better jargon than I am about to use) I think it's great that he's devoted to River but you are right, it's also very sad and inhibits him.

He does look quite respectable with his shirt off though and that goes a long way to make up for all sorts of character flaws.

I've seen some Simon/Inara fic which is just wrong on many levels. EWWWWW!!!! Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong - my brain needs irrigating now!!!!

The special hell. Tee hee. I watched 'Our Mrs Reynolds' again last night. So, so brilliant. They should've used Inara in comedy more often.

Sorry about the email you will have received with the mistake - why is that things like that never happen if I have typed a lot? Seriously, earlier I lost a whole lengthy comment - it was my reply to your reply to my reply to your Serenity gush (so it really was lengthy indeed) - with some wrong keystroke or another and when I make a mistake with only a few words there, the thing gets sent - the gremlins are trying to mess with my mind!!!

You are sooooooooo making me want to go and watch Our Mrs Reynolds - for all the reasons that you mentioned and also for the exchange between Inara and Saffron cause Inara so rocks in that scene - oh dear god I want my DVDs back!!!!!!!

I think my favourite bit of all of Inara's stuff in OMR is this: "I only fell is all." Because we never really hear her using language like 'is all' like the rest of them do. So maybe Inara's background isn't as posh and privileged as it seems.

So maybe Inara's background isn't as posh and privileged as it seems. That's a distinct possibility or perhaps the crew are wearing off on her (or at least the post coital conversations with Kaylee and Mal are)
