Fic: 12th Annual Conference for Criminal Justice Students

Title: 12th Annual Conference for Criminal Justice Students
Fandoms: Bad Girls: The Musical + Murder in Suburbia
Notes: This is the result of me thinking about the Helen Stewart of the musicalverse and how Nikki might not be the first woman she's been involved with. I had it in my head to do a 'Five Women Helen Stewart Encountered At Conferences' type thing (loosely titled 'It looks good on the CV'). And I might still do that at some point. So this might be the first part of a mini-series type thing. I have some notes on other crossovery women I'd like Helen to meet up with. If you have any ideas I'd love to hear them :)

Most of the people there had seen the conference as a bit of a skive. A couple of days away from classes and a chance to get pissed in the hotel bar, at the expense of the uni. But Helen was there to learn. She drank in the wisdom of the speakers, taking copious notes and asking thought-provoking questions during plenary sessions. She wasn’t a swot, she just wanted to be able to help people when she graduated.

Helen noticed another girl who seemed as absorbed in the conference as she did. She too was taking notes. She was also using an array of highlighter pens to colour code them. Her long dark hair fell over her page as she wrote and she angrily swiped it back. Helen soon found her attention wandering to the girl until she was watching her more often than she was looking at the person at the lectern. Once or twice, the girl looked up, green eyes locking on Helen’s before returning to her notepad.

At the afternoon coffee break, Helen sought out the raven-haired delegate. She located her loitering by a doorway, drinking from a Styrofoam cup and holding a garibaldi, her pinkie sticking out crookedly.

“Hi,” Helen said, leaning against the doorframe.

The girl turned to face her, surprised to be spoken to.

“Hello,” she said, her eyes narrowing slightly, as if she was trying to remember if she knew Helen from somewhere.

“Great conference,” Helen continued.

“Pity we can’t say as much for the refreshments,” said the girl, her nose wrinkling in distaste. “Foam cups and broken biscuits. Classy.”

“I’m Helen.”

“Kate Ashurst.”

Helen nodded and they stood in silence for a few minutes, watching their peers chain-smoke and stuff biscuits in their pockets for later.

“Are you staying at the hotel round the corner?” Helen asked.

“Yes,” Kate replied, still slightly suspicious.

“Me too, bit of a dump, eh?”

Kate looked like she was in physical pain as she nodded, obviously recalling the dilapidated state of the hotel rooms.

“I was gonna head out somewhere for a drink, to save me from spending the whole night watching for spiders coming out of the cracks in the walls. Fancy coming with me?”

Helen wasn’t expecting her to say yes. Kate, though gorgeous, seemed a little uptight.

“A drink…would be…yes, that would be nice,” Kate answered, haltingly.

“Great!” Helen said, surprised. “Meet me in the bar at seven, then we’ll head out and find somewhere a bit more upmarket.”

*

Just after midnight, two bodies stumbled through the door of Helen’s hotel room. Helen almost immediately fell onto the bed. Unsurprising, as the room was approximately the size of an airing cupboard, with the bed taking up most of the floor space. Kate joined her and they lay on their backs, giggling.

“Vodka is great,” Kate declared in a loud whisper.

“Bloody right it is,” Helen agreed.

“I’m worried about the sheets,” Kate said, not bothering to pick a topic and stick to it.

Helen rolled onto her side, a curtain of red hair falling over her face. She was about to sweep it back when another hand did it for her. She found herself looking directly into Kate’s eyes, bright and inquisitive even in the moonlit room. Helen moved forward and covered Kate’s mouth with her own. She could taste vodka and peanuts. And Kate was kissing her back.

Then a hand was on her cheek, gently pushing her away. She moved back, biting her bottom lip.

“Sorry, I didn’t…”

“No, it’s me…I…I’ve got a boyfriend.” Kate said, seemingly more sober than a few minutes previously.

“Oh…oh right,”

“I spoke to him on the phone today…his bike’s been stolen.”

“That’s…a shame.”

“I know, I told him to invest in a sturdier chain but he wo-“

“I wasn’t talking about the bike,” Helen interrupted.

“Right. Well, he’s a bit upset about it and I’d feel bad about…this,” she gestured randomly between herself and Helen.

Helen turned onto her back and stared at the ceiling.

“No, it’s fine…I just took you fo-…I mean, I read the situation wrong.”

They lay in silence, Helen was acutely aware that her shoulder was touching Kate’s.

“So are you a…I mean to say, do you only like…ummm…women?” Kate asked, and Helen could almost hear the blush in her voice. She smiled.

“I suppose so. I haven’t really thought about it.”

Kate leaned up on her elbow, resting her head in her hand.

“Really?”

“Really.”

“I’ve…thought about it.”

“And?”

“I don’t know.”

Helen smiled ruefully into the dark.

“Well, I hope you figure it all out one day.”

She heard Kate chuckle.

“So do bloody I.”

I would suggest a Harry Potter character, just to see if you could do it, but I don't know who. I am working on the notes to a long assed Harry Potter/Murder In Suburbia crossover, but I am not sure when that will take place into an actual story yet, as Fallen is kicking my ass. So, I was going through more of the piuctures of yous, and guess what I found! SUBTEXT Whoot! Okay, so that ish't hard with Ash and Scribbs, but this could be made into a manip, and it hasn't. They are so snuggling! I mean, holding hands, no one in the world but them, totally in love snuggling! Just take the guy out of the picture (litterally), and there it is! If i was a little more techno smart, i would do it.

I have no knowledge of Harry Potter so I definitely wouldn't be able to do anything in that respect.

That pic could be pretty easily manipped - if one had those kind of skills, which I definitely don't!
