Kimberley was awakened by a terrific banging coming from somewhere nearby. It took her a few moments to orient herself, remembering that she was in a hotel room. The banging seemed to be coming from the corridor. It sounded like someone was knocking on a door, but not hers. The next room, which was...she wracked her brain...Nadine's?

"Come on, man! Let us back in!"

And that would be Cheryl's voice. Kimberley rolled her eyes and contemplated putting the pillow over her face and going back to sleep. Getting involved in anything which was to do with Cheryl and Nadine was never a wise course of action. Both Nicola and Sarah studiously avoided doing so. But Kimberley always managed to get herself into the middle of things. And that night would be no different. She sighed as she swung her legs out of bed and dragged herself half-heartedly to the door. She opened it and peered round, squinting against the light.

"Cheryl?"

She finally got her eyes to focus just as Cheryl turned in her direction.

"Cheryl! Jesus! What are you wearin’?"

She already knew the answer to that question: 'not a hell of a lot'. Cheryl was dressed in an underwear set which left little to the imagination, being mostly see-through. Kimberley dived back into her room and emerged with a large, fluffy robe which she thrust in Cheryl's direction.

"Here, put this on before anybody sees you!"

Cheryl pulled the robe over her shoulders but left it open. Kimberley grabbed the belt and pulled it tightly closed, tying it around Cheryl's waist.

"What are you doin’ out here in the middle of the night?"

Cheryl tutted and jerked her head in the direction of Nadine's door.

"She's only gone and chucked us out, hasn't she?"

"Why?"

Cheryl looked down at the ground, rubbing her bare toes into the carpet. She shrugged.

"Dunno."

Indignant footsteps could be heard approaching the door and Nadine's voice floated through the wood.

"Oh you do so know!"

Kimberley closed her eyes and rubbed the bridge of her nose. She turned to Cheryl.

“Why don’t you just go back to your own room?”

“Wow, I’d never have thought of that, thanks!” Cheryl replied, sarcastically.

Kimberley resisted the urge to throttle her, and instead waited patiently for a sensible answer.

“I can’t, can I? My key’s in there.”

Heavy footsteps stamped around inside Nadine’s room for a short time before a plastic card was slipped under the door. Kimberley stooped to pick it up. She held it out to Cheryl but pulled it away just as Cheryl was about to take it. Curiosity had gotten the better of her. She regarded Cheryl questioningly.

"What did you do?"

Cheryl was all innocence, eyes wide and eyebrows raised. However, the stench of alcohol and the smudged lipstick somewhat negated the innocent image.

"I didn't do nothin'."

"Fuck off, Cheryl!" Nadine shouted.

Kimberley visibly blanched. Cheryl bit her lip.

"OK, she doesn't swear like that for nothin’. You've obviously done somethin’."

Cheryl shrugged.

"It was a misunderstanding."

The door flew open, causing both Kimberley and Cheryl to jump back in fright. Nadine stood, framed in the doorway, hair wild and untamed, thankfully having covered herself up slightly more than Cheryl. She addressed Kimberley.

"D'you want to know what she did?"

Kimberley really wasn't sure that she did want to know now. But she couldn’t leave the situation as it was. Generally when they fought it was resolved quite easily, but this one looked serious and Kimberley didn’t like it one bit.

"Maybe we could talk about this inside...Cheryl's not wearing much and we don't really want this getting out, do we?"

Nadine thought for a minute. From the intense concentration this appeared to take, Cheryl wasn't the only one who had indulged in a little alcohol. Finally she came to a decision.

"Fine. But she's not staying."

Cheryl crossed her arms, jutting one of her hips out, all of her attitude aimed right at Nadine.

“Mebbes I don’t wanna stay.”

“Oh for God’s sake,” Kimberley exclaimed, shoving Cheryl through the door and following with a sigh.

Once inside the room, Nadine sat on the bed, pointedly refusing to look at Cheryl, who was pointedly ignoring Nadine. Kimberley soon became frustrated by the pointed silence. She sat down beside Nadine.

“Right, so what did she do that made you chuck her into the corridor in her undies?”

Nadine turned to face her and Kimberley could see tears shining in her eyes, making her feel bad for her impatience. She reached out and took Nadine’s hand, giving it a squeeze, ignoring Cheryl’s huff of disgust.

“Well, we were right in the middle of s…omething…”

Kimberley silently thanked God it was Nadine telling the story or she’d have been treated to a far more vivid picture than that.

“…and just as she…well, you know…she…she…”

Kimberley moved closer to Nadine and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Cheryl threw her hands up in disbelief at this blatant display of side-taking.

“…she called me Ashley!”

Kimberley gasped, her hand flying to cover her mouth. Cheryl rolled her eyes.

“Thanks for not overreactin’, pet, ye’ve really helped me case there.”

Nadine had dropped her head onto Kimberley’s shoulder. Kimberley spoke through her hand.

“Cheryl, you didn’t!”

“Christ, it was an accident! I’d been drinkin’, I was pissed!”

Nadine lifted her head, her eyes dripping venom.

“This is even worse than the time you fell asleep while we were doin’ it.”

Kimberley closed her eyes. She really, really didn’t want to know this much detail about her friends’ sex lives.

“Cheryl, you might want to try being a bit more apologetic about this,” Kimberley suggested.

Cheryl’s mouth dropped open.

“I apologised me bloody arse off! I lost count of the number of times I said sorry before she chucked us out into the corridor in me bra and pants for the world to see!”

Kimberley turned back to Nadine.

“It does sound like it was a genuine accident,” she said softly.

Nadine wiped at her eyes and sniffed.

“I bet she’s never called him ‘Nadine’ in bed,” she countered.

Cheryl moved swiftly across the room and knelt in front of Nadine, taking her hand and refusing to let go when she tried to pull it away. She stared up at Nadine earnestly.

“No I haven’t. Because I spend the whole bloody time concentratin’ on not calling him ‘Nadine’. So much so that it’s bloody ingrained in me brain: ‘must say Ashley, must say Ashley’. Which is why it came out earlier, by mistake. I wasn’t thinkin’ about him, I was thinkin’ about you…”

Nadine had turned her head and was looking down at Cheryl.

“…just like I’m thinkin’ about you when I’m with him. Because I think about you all the bloody time. I can’t help thinkin’ about you.”

A sob escaped Nadine’s throat and she pulled Cheryl up into an embrace, which Kimberley’s arm somehow managed to get tangled in, making for an awkward few moments before they parted. She got her arm out just as they moved in for a kiss. Kimberley stood up.

“Right, well, I’m glad everythin’s sorted now.”

Cheryl reached out and grabbed her wrist.

“Thanks, babe.”

Kimberley shrugged good-naturedly.

“S’alright, you’d do it for me.”

They both looked at her doubtfully.

“OK, so you’ve never had to do it for me, but I’m sure you would.”

Nadine nodded vigorously but Cheryl’s attention was now completely taken up with kissing Nadine’s neck.

Kimberley thought she’d better get out while the getting was good.

“’Night, try not to fall out again.”

No response, Cheryl had moved up to Nadine’s lips. Kimberley quickly slipped out of the door and back into the corridor. Which was when she discovered that, in her haste to cover Cheryl’s modesty, she had left her room key inside her own room. She looked at Nadine’s door. No way was she spending the night in the same room as Nadine and Cheryl. She weighed up her other options. The last time she’d seen Sarah she’d been draped over a very burly doorman at the club they’d been to. It was highly probable that he’d found his way into her bed. Not a sight she was keen to see. With a sigh she headed for Nicola’s room. So much for being a good Samaritan.
