I actually read the books before the show, but after a lot of the casting had been announced. So some of the characters look like the actors in my head and others still have their own face as I imagined it. Brienne's a weird one because in my head she has always looked like Lauren Jackson -- tall, often awkward but hotter the more you watch her (fake) blonde Australian basketball player -- but now there's the show version of her in my head as well and they have decided to co-exist to an extent. We'll see where that goes.
One of my friends stopped reading after book three, though she plans to continue eventually. Now that's tricky. Like the other day I realized I couldn't really talk to her about all the reasons Margaery is awesome. (And in some ways, Margaery's characterization on the show is already spoiling her since you don't realize how cool she is until later in the books, because of the restricted POV.)
And don't get me wrong! I didn't at all mean to imply that they don't clearly kick ass, because they do. I just realized looking back one of the reasons I didn't get into the show earlier is all the screencaps friends were showing me were of the two of them looking absolutely gorgeous and perfect and none of the bloody or badass ones. (I don't know what it says about me that I am pretty sure I would have been completely sold on a couple shots of just about anything to do with Kahlan in 2x22, but there you have it.) This could be from primarily interacting with sports fandom, though. I have different precedents for badass hot chicks than is probably standard.
Eh, I've just been told that people have certain preconceived notions about someone who uses a username like mine. I hope they're all good things! And it's football when I'm talking about Everton, but when it's American women from Texas and Jersey I go with soccer because I feel a little silly. With my girls, it just doesn't seem as accurate. And I'm horrified to think that there might be people who don't like Downton. (I also like R&I, comics, Jennifer Lawrence, women's basketball, and assorted other crap.)
Also I feel kind of bad, like I'm totally spamming your fic's comments. Oops.
