I watch her face as she drifts off to sleep, her head resting on my bare stomach. The lazy smile falling off her lips hurts my heart as I remember watching her smile fade away in the face of people not worthy of breathing the same air as her.
“What did they say to you?”
Her eyes open slowly, brow creased in confusion.
“Who?”
I stroke the hair away from her face.
“Those girls. At the party. What did they say?”
She catches my hand in hers, plays with my fingers. She shrugs.
“They just didn’t like my dress is all.”
I pull my hand away and draw her face around so she is looking at me.
“Listen to me. Don’t ever let anyone in any world make you feel like you are less than them. You are worth ten of each of those girls.”
She giggles and turns to kiss just above my belly button, my breath catches in my throat.
“’Nara, that’s forty girls!”
“Well, that’s a conservative estimate. You’re worth far more.”
“To you.”
“Yes, to me. To everybody who knows you.”
She smiles.
“Reckon I’m happy with just you thinkin’ that.”
Still heavy with sleepiness she crawls up into my arms. I shiver as her warm body slides against my own. She props herself up on her elbows and looks down at me as I run my hands up her back.
“More’n forty girls?”
“Much more.”
She kisses me, softly, slowly. I count them. Forty kisses.
