Drabbles

Terri sits down heavily on a stool by the counter. She surveys the room, everything looks halfway done, nothing looks finished, even though she’s been working on it for weeks. Sometimes she thinks it’ll never be finished. Sometimes she thinks she should never have started.

It was a dream she’d always had; to be her own boss, doing something she loved. At Emma’s urging, she started to view it less as a dream, and more like a real possibility. She’d taken some college classes at night in small business management. And, again with Emma’s support and encouragement, she’d decided to go for it. She’d bought a small unit with a view to turning it into an arts & crafts supply store, with space for her to run little taster sessions and classes.

It had seemed so possible then. Now, it doesn’t. She’s still working full time, and trying to get the store to a point where it’s workable. Everything costs money, everything takes time...

She sighs and stands back up, rubbing the back of her neck. Her phone starts ringing and she digs it out of her pocket, glancing at her watch and cringing.

“Hey sweetie,” she says, surprised at the weariness evident in her voice. “I’m sorry, I’ll be home soon.”

“Mmmhmmm,” Emma says. “Open the door.”

Terri’s brow creases in confusion in her tired state.

“Huh?” she says, moving to do as she’s told anyhow.

She opens the door to reveal Emma standing with her phone pressed to her ear and a bag dangling from her hand.

“Surprise,” Emma says into the phone, smiling softly.

Terri’s heart melts. She hangs up and slips the phone back into her pocket, watching Emma do the same. Terri steps aside to let Emma into the store and closes the door afterward, locking it. She turns and leans back against the door, watching as Emma places the bag on the counter and takes off her jacket, looking around the space as she does so, a smile growing on her face.

“Wow! The place is really coming together,” she enthuses.

Terri snorts.

“Yeah, sure it is,” she says, her eyes finding every imperfection possible as she glances around. “At this rate, it’ll never be ready.”

“Hey,” Emma scolds, approaching Terri where she’s still leaning against the door. “Of course it will. Honestly. I mean, I was only here a couple of days ago and I can see all the progress you’ve made.”

Terri shrugs, her eyes on the floor. Emma stops directly in front of her and gently tips her chin up.

“You can do this,” Emma says, looking directly into Terri’s eyes. “You know you can do this.”

Terri looks at her for a long moment.

“No, I don’t, not right now,” she says. “But it means the world to me that you know I can.”

Emma shakes her head and leans in to kiss Terri, her hands going to her hips.

“Don’t,” Terri protests, turning her head away. “I’m all dirty and gross.”

Emma smiles against Terri’s cheek, slipping her arms around her waist and squeezing.

“Yeah, you are,” she agrees, wrinkling her nose. “But I don’t care.”

And it’s the truth. Emma’s still not great with messes. But Terri could be covered from head to foot in grime and Emma wouldn’t care. She presses her face into Terri’s neck and inhales the scent of a genuine hard day’s work mixed in with the comforting smell that’s simply Terri. She lifts her head and seeks out Terri’s lips again, and this time Terri acquiesces. The kiss is slow, languid; a kiss between two people who aren’t in a hurry, who know they have all the time in the world to enjoy each other.

Terri’s stomach growls, interrupting the tender moment. Terri pulls away from the kiss and scowls in the general direction of the noise, while Emma unsuccessfully stifles a giggle behind her hand. Terri shifts her scowl to Emma and she relents, bringing her hand down to rub Terri’s belly gently.

“My poor, hungry baby,” she murmurs. “You’ve been working so hard.”

“I have,” Terri agrees, her lower lip starting to protrude.

“You really have,” Emma says, rubbing her nose against Terri’s. “And I miss you. We haven’t eaten dinner together all week.”

“I know, sweetie,” Terri says, her thumbs stroking Emma’s hips through her jeans. “And I know I said I’d be home earlier tonight…I just…”

“Honey,” Emma interrupts, a gentle hand on Terri’s face. “It’s okay, it’ll all be worth it in the end. And we’re going to eat dinner together tonight so it’s fine.”

Emma inclines her head towards the bag on the counter. Terri breaks into a smile.

“This is why you’re my favourite person in the world,” she says.

“Because I feed you?” Emma asks, a twinkle in her eye. “Gee, thanks honey.”

“Nope,” Terri says, shaking her head vehemently. “Because you always know exactly what I need. Like tonight…tonight I needed food, a pep talk, and you…not necessarily in that order.”

Emma shakes her head and rolls her eyes, unable to keep the grin off her face.

“You always manage to charm your way out, don’t you?” she grumbles, playfully pinching Terri’s side.

“I can’t help it that you’re more susceptible than most to my charms,” Terri counters, pushing away from the door and taking Emma’s hand, leading her towards the food.

Emma sighs dramatically as she opens the bag and starts to bring out cartons of Chinese food and chopsticks.

“It’s true, you’re irresistible,” she deadpans. “It’s a wonder I can function at all in society when I’m really just a slave to your charms.”

Terri’s opening the cartons and picking at things with her fingers. She yelps when Emma slaps her hand away and holds up a set of chopsticks for her. She takes them with a sidelong glance at Emma.

“I have a feeling that you’re mocking my charms,” she says. “But you brought food so I forgive you.”

“Now, honey,” Emma says, looking at Terri with wide brown eyes. “Would I ever mock your charms?”

Terri’s spreading a dustsheet on the floor and Emma hands her the cartons of food. They move to the improvised picnic blanket, sitting opposite each other, cross legged. Terri raises an eyebrow at Emma as she chews on some noodles.

“You’d better not,” she warns. “Or I won’t let you get your hands on my charms later.”

Emma laughs.

“I love you,” she says, the words falling from her lips easily.

“You’re just saying that so you get to touch my charms,” Terri says with a wink.

But she leans forward and plants a greasy kiss on Emma’s lips.

“I love you too, baby,” she says, sincerely. “I could never have done any of this if it weren’t for you. Thank you.”

Emma ducks her head, blushing.

“You always had it in you, Terri,” she says, lifting her eyes to meet Terri’s. “I only pushed and prodded you a little and brought it out. Just like you brought me out of my little sterile bubble. So thank you.”

Terri smiles.

“I guess we just bring out the best in each other, huh?” she says.

“I guess we do,” Emma says, returning the smile. “I guess that’s why we’ve put up with each other for almost three years. Taste?”

Terri nods and accepts the mouthful Emma’s offering, taking it from her chopsticks , dragging her lips over them as she does so.

“S’good,” she says, around the food. “And don’t think I didn’t notice that subtle reminder that our anniversary is coming up. Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten.”

“I didn’t think you had,” Emma says, finishing off her food and tidying the carton back into the bag they came in, doing the same with Terri’s as she finishes.

She moves to stand up and throw the bag in the trash but Terri grabs her wrist.

“Not yet, c’mere,” she says, pulling Emma towards her.

Terri’s still sitting cross legged so Emma turns and sits in her lap, sighing happily as she leans back and brings Terri’s arms around her waist, covering them with her own.

“Just think, Emma says. “One day soon your name’s gonna be above the door. You’re gonna be the boss.”

“Oh baby,” Terri says, her warm breath tickling Emma’s neck. “You know talking about power gets me hot.”

“Terri, talking about almost anything gets you hot,” Emma says, shivering as Terri kisses her pulse point.

“Only if it’s you doing the talking,” Terri protests.

“Mmmhmmm,” Emma says, enjoying Terri’s attentions. “Well then, my little hottie, I think we should take this home, don’t you agree?”

“I do,” Terri says.

Emma stands up and pulls Terri up to join her, she catches Terri’s chin in her hand, looking into her eyes.

“And no working tomorrow when we have Abby, okay?” Emma says. “We already had to cancel family night two weeks in a row.”

“I’m sor-“ Terri begins but Emma cuts her off with a kiss.

“I told you, it’s fine,” Emma says softly. “But it won’t be fine tomorrow, okay? Promise me.”

“I promise, no working tomorrow,” Terri says, and she means it.

“Good,” Emma says, stealing a final tiny kiss before drawing away.

Emma puts on her jacket and holds Terri’s up for her to shrug into. They both move outside as Terri rummages in her bag for her keys to lock up. She finally locates them and inserts the correct one into the door. Emma smiles and wraps her arms around Terri’s waist from behind, leaning her chin on her shoulder.

“Hurry up,” she whispers. “I want to see those charms of yours at some point tonight.”

Terri laughs and turns to kiss Emma’s cheek.

“I hope you’re gonna do more than look,” she says, cheekily. “But I think you’re my lucky charm.”

Emma smiles and kisses Terri’s nose.

“Home. Now.”

“Yes ma’am,” Terri says, letting Emma drag her by the hand.
