“Terri...Terri, wake up.”

The urgent whisper and accompanying hand shaking her shoulder cut through her dreams and bring her to an unwelcome state of consciousness. She groans.

“Mmmnno...mmmtootired...wejussdidit...”

“No, it’s not that. Can you...can you please just wake up?”

Terri sighs. But something in Emma’s voice rouses her. She turns over and opens one eye, which is all her brain will allow her to do. Emma slowly comes into focus in the dim light. She’s even more wide-eyed than usual. Terri forces both eyes to open and pushes herself up on her elbow, her other hand reaching out to rest on Emma’s hip.

“What’s wrong, honey...” Terri asks, her brow creasing in concern. A thought occurs to her and she drops her voice to a whisper. “Did you hear someone in the house?”

Emma shakes her head rapidly.

“No, it’s not that...it’s ju-”

A crack of thunder cuts her off and Emma yelps and practically leaps into Terri’s arms, landing on top of her and grasping at her desperately. Terri smiles as she brings her arms up to encircle Emma’s shaking body, turning so they’re lying on their sides, facing each other, pressed against one another.

“Sweetie, you’re not scared of thunderstorms are you?” she can’t keep the amusement out of her voice.

“Yes, I am. And you can tease me about it mercilessly tomorrow when it’s over. Right now I’m going to request that you please just shut up and hold me, okay?” Emma mumbles against the skin of her shoulder and Emma can hear the genuine panic in her voice.

Terri tightens her arms around the trembling woman and kisses her ear.

“I don’t know where you got this idea that I’d tease you,” she says, running a hand up and down Emma’s bare back in smooth, comforting strokes.

“No, I can’t imagine,” Emma says. “Because, of course, you never tease me.”

“Not about things that scare you.”

A pause.

“No?”

“No.”

Another clap of thunder splits the night and Emma tenses and clutches Terri a little tighter. Terri runs her fingers through her hair and waits for her to settle back down before she speaks again.

“I’m scared of moths,” she admits.

Another pause.

“I didn’t think you were scared of anything.”

“Well, there you go.”

“Why moths?”

Terri feels gooseflesh ripple across her skin even at the thought. She swallows. Then Emma’s hand is the one doing the comforting, gently trailing a path up and down her back.

“When we were young...Kendra once...caught a bunch of them in a jar and she...I was in the shower and she tipped them in beside me. They were flapping around my face and sticking to my skin and...I just...I hate them.”

“Awww, honey,” Emma says, lifting her head to kiss Terri’s lips.

This time, when the thunder rolls, Emma barely flinches.

Terri rules all. (Maybe she was just making up the moth thing to make Emma feel better.)

I'm really flattered that you like them. They're not exactly a mainstream couple ;)
