“Emma, the first two names on that list were Elphaba and Galinda,” Terri says, her face incredulous. “We didn’t need to read any further.”
Emma nods. In fairness, she had glanced through the list before Terri folded it back up and the majority of the names were from Broadway musicals or Barbra Streisand movies. She glances down at Abby, still flicking through the pages of her book.
“Maybe we should just go with whatever name Abby picks out next?” she suggests quietly to Terri. “Leave it completely to chance?”
“It’s rude to whisper, Memma,” Abby says without looking up from the book.
Terri stifles a laugh at Emma being scolded for her manners, while Emma blushes.
“You’re right sweetie, I’m sorry,” Emma says, nudging Terri.
Terri looks between Abby and Emma a few times before coming to a decision.
“Okay, but this isn’t legally binding,” she says, pointedly. “Okay Abby, we’re not having a lot of luck with our ideas. It’s your turn again.”
A grin splits Abby’s face.
“Good, cuz I have the bestest name ever this time.”
Both Terri and Emma draw in a breath in a mixture of dread and anticipation. Abby turns the book around, it’s on the page for ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Terri’s mouth drops open.
“We’re not calling the baby ‘Beast’!”
Abby frowns.
“No, silly! You should call her ‘Belle’.”
“Belle?”
Emma and Terri speak the name in unison, and find themselves smiling. Emma turns to Terri, taking her hand.
“I’ve always loved the name ‘Isabelle’” she admits, quietly.
“That was my Nana’s name,” Terri says, rubbing her thumb over the back of Emma’s hand.
“I know,” Emma says, looking into Terri’s eyes.
“Isabelle,” Terri says, testing the name out. “Yeah, I like it. I really like it.”
“But you’ll call her ‘Belle’, right?” Abby asks, obviously not as taken with the formal name as she is with the contraction.
Emma smiles down at her.
“Yes, we’ll call her Belle,” she assures the child. “Thank you, Abby. You really helped us out today.”
Abby nods seriously.
“That’s okay,” she says, turning back to her book, continuing to talk to herself. “I think maybe I’m a better namer than my Uncle Finn!”
Emma and Terri chuckle, their hands linking on Emma’s stomach again.
